Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh report over 5 fold jump in daily COVID19 cases compared to their last year’s high

As compared to their maximum daily cases last year, Madhya Pradesh has increased its daily number of COVID19 cases by 5.6 times, Uttar Pradesh by 5.4 times, and Rajasthan by 4.8 times. Read how other states fare.

The government has advised that it is high time for people to start wearing masks inside their homes as well.

In its press briefing on Monday (April 26), the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that most of the states have surpassed their records of reporting COVID19 cases in a day, as compared to the data of the last year. The most staggering surge of daily cases has been observed in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh where the daily number of cases have increased by over five times since last year.

As per the statement issued by the health ministry, Madhya Pradesh has increased its daily number of COVID19 cases by 5.6 times, Uttar Pradesh by 5.4 times, Rajasthan by 4.8 times, West Bengal and Haryana by 3.8 times, Telangana by 2.7 times, Jharkhand by 2.8 times, Bihar by 3.1 times, Maharashtra by 2.8 times, Karnataka by 3.3 times, Tamil Nadu by 2.3 times and Delhi by 3.3 times as compared to their maximum daily cases last year.

Also, the Union Home Ministry stated that India has enough stocks of medical oxygen but the challenge is to transport it to ‘high-demand areas’ from the states that produce it.

“We have enough stock of oxygen. The issue is transportation which we are trying to resolve by active involvement of all stake holders,” Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs Piyush Goyal  told a press conference in the national capital.

Goyal also stated that the time taken for the oxygen supplies to be transported has been reduced to 1-2 hours from 4-5 days due to the assistance by the Indian Air Force transport aircraft.

Meanwhile on the need to maintain COVID-appropriate behaviours, the government has advised that it is high time for people to start wearing masks inside their homes as well.

The COVID19 situation in India continues to be grim as the country is surpassing its daily number of cases almost every day. India has recorded more than 352,000 new COVID19 cases in the last 24 hours ending 8 am today (April 26), raising the country’s total infections to over 17.3 millions. Out of these, over 2.8 million cases are currently active. With 2,812 new fatalities, the death toll in the country due the virus is over 195,000.
