COVID19 Update: With over 366,000 daily cases, India reports a slight drop in new infections

India sees a decline in the daily new COVID19 cases, with over 366,161 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours. On May 8, 403,738 new cases were registered in the country. Uttarakhand govt has imposed a curfew from May 11 to May 18. Delhi, UP, J&K govts extend lockdown.

Yesterday, May 9, India recorded 366,161 fresh coronavirus infections and 3,754 deaths due to the virus. There has been a slight drop in daily corona cases as on May 8, the country had registered 403,738 new cases and 4,092 deaths.

For the past few days, the country has been reporting over 400,000 daily new cases. The country reported over 401,000 new cases on May 7; 414,000 cases on May 6.

Besides, the country’s daily death cases, too, was more than 4,000 in the last two days. Yesterday, 3,754 deaths were recorded, taking the total death toll to 246,116. On May 8, at least 4,092 deaths were recorded in a day.

The total tally cases now stand at 22 million with 3.7 million active cases. With 618,070, Maharashtra shared the highest active caseload in the country. It is followed by Karnataka (564,505) and Kerala (423,863).

Maharashtra, the state that continues to share the highest caseload, daily cases have dropped below 50,000 for the first time in a month.

Meanwhile, amid the rising COVID cases, the Uttarakhand government has imposed a curfew from 6 am on May 11 to 6 am on May 18. Nearly 6,000 new daily cases have been reported in the state.

Yesterday, the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extended lockdown in the national capital till 5 am on May 17. The Uttar Pradesh government has also extended its lockdown till May 17. Jammu and Kashmir has also announced an extension of COVID curfew till 7 am May 17.

From today, May 10, a two-week complete lockdown begins in Tamil Nadu. A 14-day lockdown also began today in Karnataka.

To review the COVID19 situation in their states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday spoke with chief ministers of Karnataka, Bihar, Punjab, and Uttarakhand.

Meanwhile, as per the data shared by the Union health ministry, a total ofΒ  170 million people have been vaccinated so far. As many as 689,652 beneficiaries were administered COVID vaccines in the last 24 hours.

The age-wise distribution in terms of vaccine doses administered shows 40.9 per cent of beneficiaries above 60 years, 45.9 per cent between 45-60 years; 8.8 per cent between 30-45 years, and 4.4 per cent between 18-30 years of age have been administered COVID19 vaccine as on May 10.
