In its latest bulletin released at 4:30 pm today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that a cyclone named ‘Jawad’ has formed in the Bay of Bengal and it is expected to make a landfall on the Indian coast along the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
“It is likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts by tomorrow, the 4th December morning,” the IMD bulletin stated.
“Thereafter it is likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move along Odisha coast reaching near Puri around 5th December noon. Subsequently it is likely to continue to move north-northeastwards along coastal Odisha towards West Bengal coast,” it added.

The weather department has stated that the wind velocity of the cyclone is not expected to exceed 110 kilometres per hour (kmph).
Advisory for fishers
Also, in its safety advisory in the wake of the cyclone, the IMD has asked the fishers in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to fully suspend fishing operations for three days.
“Fishermen are advised not to venture into westcentral and adjoining southeast & eastcentral Bay of Bengal on 3rd December, over west-central & northwest Bay of Bengal and along & off north Andhra Pradesh – Odisha- West Bengal coasts during 3rd – 5 th December 2021,” it stated.
Red alert for heavy rainfall issued
The weather department has also forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal — where a red alert has been issued. The rainfall intensity is expected to reduce after December 6 and shift towards the northeast parts of the country.
Precautions to be taken against Cyclone Jawad
The IMD has released following set of precautions to ensure minimal damage due to the Cyclone Jawad:
- Total suspension of fishing operations.
- Check for traffic congestion on your route before leaving for your destination.
- Follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard.
- Avoid going to areas that face the water logging problems often.
- Avoid staying in vulnerable structure.
- Harvest the ripen crops like Paddy & Horticultural crops and also secure the harvested crops securely from the damage due to rain and strong winds
