Satna, Madhya Pradesh
The situation in Kashmir valley continues to be hostile as yet another soldier, 25-year-old Sepoy Karanveer Singh laid down his life while battling the militants in the Shopian district on October 20.
A resident of Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district, Singh died on the spot after sustaining a head injury during a gunbattle with the assailants who were reportedly responsible for the murder of the Saharanpur-based carpenter Sagir Ahmed on October 16.
As per his father Ravi Kumar Singh who has himself served in the Indian Army, his son had joined the army in 2017 under the 21 Rajput Regiment and was recently transferred to the Rashtriya Rifles — army’s branch which specialises in counter-insurgency operations.
“Lately, 44 RR (Rashtriya Rifles) were deployed in Srinagar. Today, I received the news that Karan has sustained a head injury in Shopian while two of his fellow soldiers have been injured. Karan died on the spot,” his father told Gaon Connection.
“Yesterday morning, I talked to him. He assured me that he will soon apply for a 12-day leave and visit his home to get me treated in a hospital as I was not keeping well for a while. But I am proud of my son and will live the rest of my life with immense pride,” the former serviceman added.
While the soldier’s mother Mithilesh Singh was not in a condition to talk, she constantly wailed that she had lost her gem.

Younger ones remember — ‘He used to narrate stories of the Army’
Karanveer was immensely popular amongst his younger cousins. “Bhaiya used to inspire us to join the armed forces. He always narrated stories about life in the army or some instance of extraordinary courage on the battlefield,” Nitin Singh, his paternal cousin shared with Gaon Connection.
