Poonam Saini of Jaipur is a dreamer, a wife, a mother and a daughter, all rolled into one, and she’s managed to make herself the heroine of her own story. She’s also got family members to admit that a girl is no less than a boy!

Here’s celebrating a woman who had a dream and worked steadfastly to make it a success.

Poonam’s life was very different some years ago. She lived in Mumbai with her chartered accountant husband Rakesh Kumar Saini and children, with a dream in her heart, but with no idea how to make it work. She wanted to be a businesswoman. “But, there was really no time to think. There was no time to even chat with my husband, mother-in-law or share a meal with the family. Life was so hectic,” she said. “The children were small and we had to play a role in every aspect of their lives,” she added.

And then, the family decided to move back to their hometown of Jaipur. And finally, Poonam’s dream began to take shape. Rakesh began his practice in his home town and Poonam began a business —  she sold fabric, shoes and made dupattas.

Poonam realised early on that the online market would be her target. “In offline, you have to open a store, keep stock and sit for hours. In online, you can capture a vast market across the country sitting in your home. I tied up with Flipkart, because their seller support team is very good and payment is quick and easy,” she said.

Soon enough, Poonam and Rakesh sat down to brainstorm and understand the algorithm of e-commerce. The orders began coming in, first a trickle and then a steady flow.

As business grew, Poonam leaned more and more on one person. “Not my husband, but my mother-in-law,” she smiles. “My children spend a lot of time with her and are learning life principles and culture from her.”

Soon enough, seeing the growth of the enterprise, Rakesh quit his practice and joined Poonam’s business. “The biggest thing about this is that we are now together twenty four hours,” beams Poonam.

Poonam did not stop with becoming a success. She’s inspired and encouraged others to take up business too. Sandeep Chagda, a seller, said “She inspired me to start my venture. I contacted her, took her guidance and then started off.”

The reason she does so is simple, but beautiful. “The way Flipkart supports its seller, I want to support Flipkart’s sellers.”
