Teacher’s Diary: ‘If a special child gets teacher’s help, then they can manage their own life’

Abhishek Somvanshi is a teacher at ‘Yellow Train’ school in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, where even special children are taught. In today's teacher's diary, let's get to know about the stories related to these children and the unique ways in which he teaches them.

I was not a very bright student during my school days. I never spoke in the class and mostly remained quiet. But when we had our theatre class, I enjoyed it and got the opportunity to express myself freely. In this class, you had the freedom to agree or disagree with each other, so for many days I felt that this was the class where a revolution in the education world could happen.

In our school, all the children are equal in our eyes, no student is inferior to anyone. This thought should be the cornerstone for all the teachers before adopting any new approach in their teaching. If you love your students, then any such idea that you innovate will automatically connect with them.

The story we are discussing here is about one of our special students with whom we have been working since the sixth grade. Gradually, our communication with him improved and the child began to make significant progress. Then the COVID-19 crisis hit. Our communication with that child was broken, and it felt like everything had been washed away. Then one day, the child calls and says, “Anna, I miss you.”

But there are some other children who cannot even make a phone call. There are also children who say that they are bored of your physics class.

At that moment during the pandemic, I realised that if I get discouraged, that child who hopes to see me again would also lose hope. So, I continued to work with that child and also started teaching online. Slowly, the child began to show progress again, and I regained hope.

If these children receive the help and emotional support of guardians and teachers, they will be able to overcome the system and manage their own lives. This is no small feat, they have the ability to do everything, they just need some assistance.
