Uttar Pradesh govt announces Rs 585 crores relief package for crop loss due to unseasonal rains, floods

The state government’s relief package aims to compensate farmers who had faced devastating damage to their crops due to floods in the months of September-October last year as well as those who suffered losses due to the unseasonal rains in January this year. Eleven days after the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government has released a sum of Rs 5,850 million to compensate the farmers who suffered losses due to floods and unseasonal rainfall during 2021-22.

“Following an assessment of crop losses, the government has pegged the crop loss in the state at around Rs 5,85,95,65,817. Working with full force for the interest of around 1,626,225 farmers, the state government has released the compensation to the respective district collectors who will distribute it among farmers through DBT (direct benefit transfer),” Manoj Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj was quoted in an official press statement dated April 4.

The press release mentioned that the farmers’ crops were badly damaged due to torrential rains and heavy floods in September and early October last year and later in January, this year.

“The compensation amount will be directly transferred to the bank account (DBT) of farmers from the district treasury. In wake of the natural calamities, the government is providing financial assistance from the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF),” it stated.

Additionally, the state government also took note of accidental fire in the agricultural fields due to overhead electricity wires.

The press statement mentioned that Chief Minister Adityanath has instructed the officers to take necessary safety measures to check these incidents.

“Apart from the farmers covered by the crop insurance scheme, if any farmer’s crop burns due to electrical fires, compensation must be provided to them as per the rules of the ‘Mandi Samiti’ (agriculture marker council),” the statement quoted the Chief Minister.
