Teacher’s Diary: ‘When a book donation campaign helped set up a rural school library’

Abhishek Shukla is a teacher at Sahjapur Primary School in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur. He has started a unique library in his school by bringing in volunteers who donate books. Abhishek is sharing his experiences in this teachers' diary.

During the summer vacations which just concluded in June, while I was at the summer camp which was organised to keep students engaged in co-curricular activities, the idea of setting up a library came to my mind. Various activities were organised for the children at the camp. At that time, I thought, why not have those books in school which can help children learn beyond their curriculum. That’s why we initiated a book donation campaign for which I personally donated the books to inspire others in the village. And that’s how it all began from there.

Some of the school’s former students also joined this campaign, who are now doing well in their respective occupational fields.

Our school’s initiative has also received appreciation. All the books are curated according to the children’s preferences. Since we have students up to Class 5, we have also included some comics to engage the children. Just as you donate food, clothing, blood, and other items, I urge you to consider donating books as well.

Education is the key to shaping the society and the nation towards a new direction and reaching greater heights. Good education is not possible without books. Therefore, I urge everyone to donate books to their nearby government schools according to their willingness and capability, enriching the libraries and contributing to the bright future for the children.
