Teacher’s Diary: ‘Teaching students by sitting on a floor helps me connect with them’

Anurag Chaturvedi is an assistant teacher at Kachhpura Primary School in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. In his teacher's diary, he is sharing his experiences that have deepened the bond and connection between the children and the school.

I teach students by sitting amongst them on the floor so that the connection between the children and me is nurtured and stays strong. The children in my class are currently studying in Class One, so everything is new for them. Therefore, they need to be taught in a special way. In other private schools, children are taught many things at home before coming to school, but here, our children get their first taste of formal education at school. Also, I have felt that by sitting with the children on the floor and teaching them, their enthusiasm for learning increases multifold.

Here is an incident that I will always be etched in my memory. During lunchtime at school, two girls couldn’t have their lunch. I was concerned that if the children didn’t eat, how would they manage? So, I picked up my lunch box and gave it to them. At first, the children weren’t ready to eat, but after convincing them, they had their lunch. Then, before the end of the school day, both of them went home and brought food for me from there, saying, “Sir, please have this too.” I felt really touched by their words, that when I fed the children, they also took care of me. That moment was very special to me.

I also gathered a lot of information about the harmful effects of tobacco and betel nut through the Health Department and newspapers. I felt that children should also be aware of these harmful substances. I provided the students with information about the damage caused by tobacco, and how it leads to various diseases, and how to stay away from these substances. This information had a significant impact on the children. Today, they go home and tell their family members to stay away from these substances.
