COVID-19 update: Daily new cases cross 1,000 mark in Lucknow, UP; schools shut for Class 1-8 till April 11

The number of active cases in Uttar Pradesh have tripled in the last two months. In the wake of the rising COVID-19 cases, the state government has ordered closing down schools for students of class 1-8 till April 11.

Uttar Pradesh has recorded 3,290 new cases in the last 24 hours; 14 deaths have been recorded in the state. In the state capital, Lucknow, 1,041 cases have been registered. Six people have lost their lives to the virus.

In the last two months between February 3 and April 3, the number of active cases in the state have tripled — from 5,007 to 14,073. This data was shared by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare today, April 3. As per the evening report shared by the state government, Lucknow has the highest number of active cases at 5,408.

Nearly 300 new cases have been recorded in Prayagraj in the last 24 hours. This is followed by Varanasi (226), Kanpur Nagar (171), Gorakhpur (92),  Bareli (71), and Gautam Budh Nagar (70).

In the wake of the rising COVID-19 cases, Uttar Pradesh government has extended the epidemic control act till June 30 this year. It has also ordered closing of schools, both government and private, for students of class 1-8 till April 11.

As of today, April 3, 166,110 samples have been tested in the last 24 hours in the state. So far, 35 million (35,236,205) total samples have been tested.

As per the health ministry, India has recorded 89,129 new cases in the last 24 hours. Eight states — Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh report a steep rise in daily new cases. They account for 81.42 per cent of the new cases.

Moreover, 714 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. Six states including Uttar Pradesh account for 85.85 per cent of the new deaths. Sixteen deaths were reported from the state. Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported the highest casualties at 481.
