Five states in peninsular India, including Kerala and Maharashtra, account for 82% of active COVID cases: Centre

Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu account for 82 per cent of India’s active caseload. Kerala again reported over 30,000 new daily infections today and 162 deaths. But its case fatality ratio is 0.50%. Maharashtra has also registered an increase in daily cases.

Five states in peninsular India are reporting almost 83 per cent of India’s total active caseload. With 51.19 per cent, Kerala is reporting the highest share of the total active COVID19 cases in the country. It is followed by Maharashtra (16.01 per cent), Karnataka (5.8 per cent), Tamil Nadu (5.5 per cent), and Andhra Pradesh (4.21 per cent).

Together these states account for 82.71 per cent of the total 333,725 active cases in the country as of today August 26. This data was shared during the media briefing by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan. He said that Kerala is the only state reporting over 100,000 active COVID19 cases, while four states have 10,000 to 100,000 active cases and 31 states have less than 10,000 active cases.

According to the latest (till 2pm August 26) data shared by the Kerala health bulletin, the active cases in the state stands at 181,209. Over 30,000 new daily infections were reported in the past 24 hours. Ernakulam district reported the highest daily cases at 3,872. It is followed by Kozhikode (3,461), Thrissur (3,157), Malappuram (2,985), and Kollam (2,619).

During the health ministry’s press conference, it was highlighted that testing in Kerala needs to be increased. Kerala is only tracing less than two people per infected person and contact tracing is needed. People in home isolation need to be strictly monitored. More than 80 per cent COVID19 patients are in home isolation in the state.

As per the Kerala health bulletin, 162 people in Kerala have lost their lives to the virus today, taking the cumulative death toll in the state to 20,134.

Highest case fatality ratio in Punjab

Data collected by ORF India, an independent analysis foundation, shows that Kerala has 0.50 per cent of case fatality ratio. Case fatality ratio (CFR) is the proportion of individuals diagnosed with a disease who die from that disease and is therefore a measure of severity among detected cases.

With 2.7 per cent, Punjab has the highest case fatality ratio. It is followed by Uttarakhand (2.2 per cent), Nagaland and Maharashtra (2.1 per cent each).

COVID cases rising in Mumbai

Meanwhile, a sharp rise in COVID19 positive cases and deaths have been reported today in the financial capital of India. As per the latest data, 397 positive cases were reported in Mumbai; 507 discharge and seven deaths in the last 24 hours. Five days back on August 21, Mumbai had reported 262 new cases.

Also, 22 students in a residential orphanage in Mumbai have been found COVID positive and the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has sealed the institute.
