It is an insidious companion who won’t leave your side. In good times or bad, from tension to  pension…and every other problem in between, wherever you turn it is there, to tempt you, taunt you, seduce you. And ultimately, lead you to your downfall… 

This is the gist of the poem Sharaab cheez hi aisi hai, na chodi jaaye…composed and read out aloud by Neelesh Misra, founder of Gaon Connection, India’s largest rural media platform.

The poem forms part of Gaon Connection’s collaboration with the World Health Organization South-East Asia, for a social campaign against alcohol abuse, titled Meri Pyaari Zindagi that is a series of audio and video stories and memes to raise awareness on alcoholism. 

Misra uses the powerful tool of storytelling, and in this case poetry, to address the ever present and ever growing threat to physical and mental health in the country brought about, among other things, by alcohol abuse in both the young and the old.

The poem points out how alcohol-consumption has been ‘normalised’, glamourised and even glorified in films, songs, advertisements…everywhere. The statutory warnings against alcohol consumption have been reduced to a travesty, Misra says in his poem. 

The poem highlights the physical as well as the mental illnesses that are directly or indirectly an outcome of alcohol abuse. 

According to WHO, in 2016, the harmful use of alcohol resulted in some 3 million deaths (5.3 per cent of all deaths) worldwide. Of the deaths attributable to alcohol consumption worldwide in 2016, 28.7 per cent were due to injuries, 21.3 per cent due to digestive diseases, 19 per cent due to cardiovascular diseases, 12.9 per cent due to infectious diseases and 12.6 per cent due to cancers.

In a telling report by WHO, titled Global status report on alcohol and health 2018, alcohol per capita consumption increased in the WHO Western Pacific and South-East Asia regions. These regions include the highly populated countries of China and India. In China, the per capita consumption of alcohol has risen from 4.1 litres in 2005 to 7.2 litres in 2016. In India, the per capita consumption of liquor has gone from 2.4 litres in 2005 to 5.7 litres in 2016. 

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization, India, has  predicted, that by 2030, India would have suffered an economic loss of USD 1.03 trillion due to mental health conditions. A lot of mental health issues are linked to alcohol abuse. And, according to the National Mental Health Survey, nearly 150 million Indians need mental health care services but less than 30 million are actually seeking care.

Sharaab cheez hi aisi hai, na chodi jaaye…

शराब चीज़ ही ऐसी है 

ना छोड़ी जाए 

ये मेरे यार के जैसी है,

ना छोड़ी जाए 

नशा शराब में होता तो नाचती बोतल 

चार बोतल वोदका 

काम मेरा रोज़ का 

बचपन से अब तक 

यही तो सुना है

टेन्शन के मिलने से 

पेन्शन के मिलने तक 

स्कूलों के पीछे 

या गाड़ी की डिक्की में

या हँस के मुस्का के उसको चुना है 

“यहाँ शराब पीना मना है” 

हजारों ऐसा बोर्ड बना है 

मगर कर दिया अनसुना है 

क्यूँकि 

शराब चीज़ ही ऐसी है 

ना छोड़ी जाए

असल में ये कह रहे हो 

“I am sinking, you want to sink with me?”

जो जिसको देख के 

कोई आह भरता है

उस दारू वाली सेल्फ़ी में बताएँ कि क्या क्या है?

हार्ट अटैक का ख़तरा 

कई बार कैन्सर 

हाँ, शराब के भी कारण कैन्सर हो जाता है 

ये बात तुम्हें कोई ना बताता है 

उनका तुमसे ऐसा ही तो नाता है 

लाइट ड्रिंकिंग के कारण भी कैन्सर हो जाता है 

दारू का गिलास 

इमपोटेंट होने का ख़तरा बढ़ाता है 

स्टैमिना घटाता है 

कमाई उड़ाता है 

इम्यूनिटी घटाता है 

हर दस सेकंड कोई शराब से मर जाता है 

अट्ठारह पर्सेंट मर्डर 

अट्ठारह पर्सेंट सूयसायड

चौंतीस पर्सेंट ऐक्सिडेंट 

सब दारू से ही आता है 

ग़लती हमारी है 

हम गाना कहानी को लिखने सुनाने 

में देते गए सबको पीने के बहाने 

दिल लगा तो पी ली शराब 

दिल टूटा पी ली शराब 

इंतज़ार? हीरो ने पी ली शराब 

आ गए वो तो ख़ुशी में पी ली शराब 

फ़िल्मों की थीम्ज़ में 

चुटकुले में मीम्ज़ में 

गानों में ग़ज़लों में 

इतना किया ग्लोरिफ़ाई 

जैसे दारू जो पीता वही हाई फ़ाई 

हर एक बोली में, हर एक भाषा में 

अड्वान्स होने की नई ही परिभाषा में 

शराब को बनाया है महिला की आज़ादी का सिम्बल?

कैसी है आज़ादी भई ये 

बात है बॉस सिम्पल 

लड़का या लड़की हो 

अमीरी हो, कड़की हो 

बीमारी लाती है शराब 

कंगाली लाती है शराब 

कोई लिबरेशन न लाए शराब 

उल्टा ये कर जाए गुर्दा ख़राब 

बदहाली लाती है शराब 

थोड़ी जी जो पी ली है 

चोरी तो नहीं की है

हाँ की है जी चोरी! 

अपनी ही सैलरी ख़ुद से चुराते हो
