Health experts have stated that mass, indiscriminate and incomplete vaccination can potentially trigger new, mutant strains of the COVID19 virus.

The delta version of COVID19, which is responsible for the ‘second wave’ of the pandemic in India is mutating with newer strains of the Sars-Cov-2 virus being identified in different countries around the globe. The general symptoms of delta version, however, have been reported to be not as serious as the spread of the infection.

Tim Spector, a British scientist who has come up with an mobile phone application to create a database of the symptoms experienced by the COVID19-infected individuals in United Kingdom was quoted as saying in a news report that being infected by the Delta variant can feel ‘more like a bad cold’ for younger people.

Spector warned that although the symptoms would range from headache and cough to fever and loss of taste and smell, the youth can easily spread the virus to the vulnerable sections of the population who can develop worse symptoms.

The daily cases of COVID19 have now begun to fall and the second wave is now expected to be over in the coming few weeks.

“People might think they’ve just got some sort of seasonal cold and they still go out to parties and they might spread around to six other people,” Spector said.

“We think this is fueling a lot of the problem… the message here is that if you are young, you are going to get milder symptoms anyway…It might just feel like a bad cold or some funny ‘off’ feeling – but do stay at home and do get a test,” he added.

Delta variant mutates further into ‘AY.1’ or ‘delta plus’

The delta variant, which has to be the most infectious so far, was reported on June 14 to have mutated to a strain that has been named as B.1.617.2.1 — also called AY.1 for convenience.

Meanwhile, in a report submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, health experts including those from the national taskforce for COVID management, have stated that mass, indiscriminate and incomplete vaccination can potentially trigger new, mutant strains of the COVID19 virus.
