For the first time, India’s daily death toll due to COVID19 crosses 4,000; over 400,000 new cases in 24hrs

The country has reported over 401,000 new cases in the last 24 hours, slightly less than the 414,000 cases recorded on May 7. Amid rising cases, complete lockdown has been imposed in Karnataka and Mizoram. More details here.

With 401,078 fresh infections, India has recorded a slight dip in COVID cases in the last 24 hours. The country reported over 414,000 new cases on May 6 and 3,915 deaths due to the virus.

The total caseload in the country now stands at 21.8 million.

As many as 4,187 people lost their lives to the virus in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative death toll to 238,270. This is the first time the country has reported over 4,000 deaths.

Yesterday, over 318,000 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to nearly 18 million.

With 54,022 new cases, Maharashtra continues to report the highest daily cases. Out of these, 3,039 cases were reported in Mumbai. Karnataka has reported nearly 49,000 new cases, and Kerala over 38,000 new cases.

Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, the Karnataka government has decided to impose a two-week complete lockdown, starting from 6 am on May 10 to 6 am on May 25.

Yesterday, Mizoram government also announced a seven-day complete lockdown in the state starting from 4 am of May 10 till 4am of May 17. Nearly 200 new cases have been reported in the state in the last 24 hours.

Two days back, the Jharkhand government extended the lockdown-like restrictions in the state till May 13.

Two days back on May 6, the Rajasthan government announced a complete lockdown in the state from May 10 to 24.

Besides Karnataka and Mizoram, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh are observing lockdowns as the cases continue to rise.

Meanwhile, the country has so far administered 167,346,544 vaccine doses. Over 2,297,257 vaccine doses were administered in the last 24 hours.
