India crosses 180,000-case threshold of daily COVID19 infections; Class 10 CBSE exams cancelled, Class 12 postponed

The country has reported over 1,000 deaths in the last 24 hours. This is the highest daily death count in nearly six months. India has registered the highest-single day spike in new COVID19 cases with 184,372 coronavirus infections reported in the country yesterday, April 13.

Over 1,000 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours. This is the highest daily death count in nearly six months. This data was shared by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare today.

Amid the upsurge in COVID cases, the national recovery rate has also dropped. As of today, April 14, the national recovery rate is 88.92 per cent. Yesterday, it was 89.51 per cent. Last week, the national recovery rate was 92.48 per cent.

There has been a growing demand to postpone or cancel the upcoming [Central Board of Secondary Education] CBSE board examinations. Today, in a meeting with the Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal, Secretary and other officials, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to cancel Class 10 board exams and postpone the CBSE 12th board exams. The situation will be reviewed on June 1 and revsied dates will be announced thereafter. A notice of at least 15 days will be given before the start of the examinations.

This year, the CBSE board exams of classes 10th and 12th were scheduled to be held from May 4 to June 14 and from May 4 to June 11, respectively. The board exams for Class 10th are hereby cancelled. The results of Class 10th board will be prepared on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the Board.

Any candidate who is not satisfied with the marks allocated to him/her on this basis will be given an opportunity to sit in an exam as and when the conditions are conducive to hold the exams, Pokhriyal tweeted.

Yesterday, Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the central government to cancel the upcoming CBSE examinations.

Ten states including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, have shown a rise in the COVID daily new cases. Over 82 per cent of the new cases are reported from these 10 states.

Maharashtra, with over 60,000 new cases and 281 deaths, remains the worst-affected state. Yesterday, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced a lockdown in effect from today 8 pm till the next 15 days across the state.

The national capital of Delhi, also reported the highest single-day spike yesterday with 13,468 new corona infections and 81 deaths.

Meanwhile, 594 devotees in Kumbh Mela being organised in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar — one of the worst affected cities of the state — tested positive for the virus, claim news reports. The total active caseload of the city to 2,812.
