Kerala reports drop in daily COVID19 cases

After reporting over half of India’s daily COVID19 cases, Kerala has reported a drop in fresh infections. Yesterday, 13,984 new cases were reported in the southern state. Meanwhile, 118 people lost their lives to the virus.

For the past one week, the southern state of Kerala has been reporting nearly half of India’s total daily COVID19 cases. However, yesterday on August 2, the state reported 36 per cent of the daily new cases in India.

Of the total 38,887 new cases reported across the country, Kerala reported 13,984 new cases. This is 36 per cent of the total new infections reported in India yesterday.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID19 samples tested have also dropped from 179,130 on July 27 to 127,903 on August 2.

However, a week back on July 27, the state reported 22,129 daily cases while India had reported 42,971 new cases. This, in other words meant that Kerala accounted for over 51 per cent of the total new cases in the country.

The highest number of infections were reported in Thrissur at 2,350. This was followed by Malappuram (1,925), Kozhikode (1,772), Palakkad (1,506), Ernakulam (1,219), Kollam (949), Kannur (802), Kasaragod (703), Kottayam (673), Thiruvananthapuram (666), Alappuzha (659), Pathanamthitta (301), Wayanad (263) and Idukki (196).

Meanwhile, 118 daily deaths were reported yesterday taking the death toll in the state to 16,956. 

In the wake of the rising COVID19 cases in the southern state, the state government announced the ‘complete’ weekend lockdown from July 31 and August 1.

Also, the central government has sent a six-member team from the National Centre for Disease Control to the state to aid the state’s ongoing efforts in COVID19 management as a large number of Covid cases were being reported in Kerala.

The team headed by National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Director S K Singh, reached Kerala on July 30. Yesterday, the team visited Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur and Kasaragod districts to take stock of the situation in these districts.
