A total of 229,074 people have been evacuated from flood-affected districts in the Konkan region and western Maharashtra to safer places. As many as 875 villages in Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Pune were affected by the heavy downpour.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will visit the flood-affected areas of Patan taluka in Satara district today on July 26. He is expected to visit the relief camps set up for citizens affected by the floods.

Yesterday, Thackeray visited Chiplun city and interacted with residents to learn about their losses.

After a review meeting at Chiplun in Raigad district, Thackeray said: “The government will do everything to make them (those affected) stand on their feet. The assistance such as food, clothes, medicines and others will be provided to flood-affected people immediately. The district administration has been instructed that technical issues should not come in the way of providing assistance.”

In a tweet, he also assured that directions have been given to the district collectors to provide food, medicines, clothing immediately, and other essentials to those affected.

He has announced that a separate force on the lines of the NDRF will be set up in all districts of the state and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) will also be strengthened.

“Considering the repeated occurrence of these disasters, a system on the lines of the NDRF will be created in all the affected districts. The SDRF will be further strengthened,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, five relief camps have been set up in flood-hit Chiplun city in Ratnagiri district; 25 teams of the NDRF, four teams of the SDRF, two teams of the Coast Guard, five teams of the Navy and three teams of the Army are conducting the relief and rescue operations.

The state government has also decided to provide an emergency financial aid of Rs two crore (Rs 20 million) each to Raigad and Ratnagiri districts.

The Chief Minister also announced financial aid of Rs 50 lakh (Rs five million) each to Satara, Sangli, Pune, Kolhapur, Thane, and Sindhudurg districts.

He also said that he would announce a relief package after conducting a complete review of the flood-affected districts. “I will not announce a relief package for the sake of popularity or to make someone feel better. I will visit areas in western Maharashtra tomorrow to review the damage. A complete review of all districts, such as Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur, will be taken in the next few days and the relief package will be announced,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has said that in the later part of the week, the state can continue to expect relief from the rainfall as the monsoon now travels upwards to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The country will witness normal to below normal monsoon conditions this week, the IMD said in its forecast.
