Maharashtra rains leave 47 dead: CM Thackeray announces Rs 500,000 ex gratia compensation; rescue ops underway in Ratnagiri

As per the latest reports 47 people have died due to heavy downpour, flooding and landslides in various parts of Maharashtra.

Landslide incidents have been reported in Poladpur and Satara districts and the Konkan region of the state is flooded. Today, on July 23, three people were killed and seven were injured after a house collapsed in the Govandi area of Mumbai.

In view of the deaths post heavy landslides and rainfall, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced Rs 500,000 ex-gratia for the next of kin of those who have died in flood-related incidents in the state.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are rescuing people in Ratnagiri district where 56 villagers were rescued along with their cattle in Chiplun’s Mirjoli village after they were trapped following a landslide.

CM Thackeray was quoted as saying that the NDRF and other rescue teams are facing problems reaching the flood-affected areas in Chiplun as the roads and bridges are damaged. The Indian Army has mobilised flood relief columns to Ratnagiri to assist civil administration for rescue, relief and medical aid.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for six districts of Maharashtra affected by heavy rains. As per the IMD forecast, ‘extremely heavy’ rainfall is expected in Mumbai and nearby areas. An alert has been issued for the next 24 hours for Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to the chief minister to review the situation in Raigad, where at least 30 people have lost their lives. 

Shah has assured the central government is extending all possible help to the Maharashtra government to deal with the emerging situation in the state.

“The accident that occurred due to heavy rains and landslides in Raigad, Maharashtra, is unfortunate. In this regard, I have spoken to Chief Minister Shri Uddhav Thackeray and DG @NDRFHQ. NDRF teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations. The central government is providing all possible help there to save the lives of people,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, as per the forecast for tomorrow, heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur over the west Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, west Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana & south interior of Kerala & Karnataka.
