India records 156 new Omicron cases — highest daily number so far
In the wake of the outbreak caused by the Omicron variant of COVID19, many states have announced measures to impede its spread but the cases have still been on the rise. At present, there are 578 identified cases of Omicron variant in India. More details here.
The health ministry has advised to remain vigilant with the rising Omicron cases and ensure COVID19 appropriate behaviour.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed today, on December 27, that the total number of cases of COVID19 infection from its virulent Omicron variant has increased to 578. A total of 156 cases of Omicron infection have been identified in the last 24 hours — highest daily increase so far.
Additionally, according to the health ministry’s data, 6,531 new cases of coronavirus and 7,141 recoveries were reported in the last 24 hours. At present, the active caseload is 75,841 and the recovery rate stands at 98.40 percent.

Interestingly, vaccination against the COVID19 infection seems to have little effect on the vulnerability of a person infected with the Omicron variant.
In an analysis undertaken by the Union Health Ministry it has been found that out of the 183 cases of Omicron variant that it analysed, 91 per cent of the infections were found in people who had received both the doses of COVID19 vaccines.

As per the government analysis, of the 183 cases that were analysed, 121 reported foreign travel history and 70 per cent were asymptomatic. Also, 61 per cent of the infected persons were males while 39 per cent were females.
Meanwhile, it was also informed that 89 per cent of the adult population has received the first dose of COVID19 and 61 per cent of the eligible population is fully vaccinated.

The health ministry has advised to remain vigilant with the rising Omicron cases and ensure COVID19 appropriate behaviour. In a press briefing held on December 24, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan informed that the private health sector has been asked to be ready as it has to play an important role in managing the COVID19 pandemic.

Also, several cities have imposed restrictions to curb the spread of the fast spreading Omicron variant ahead of the upcoming New Year celebrations.
